T was the Irish in Joseph Tomelty’s voice that attracted me. to the opening of his story "Lucinda and the Birds," a. BBC recording heard recently from 4YC, but the gentleness of the beginning left me unprepared for the calm brutality of the conclusiow. This programme, which was presented without sound effects and with complete simplicity, had a perfection rare’ among radio short stories. .Tod often. these sound like mere "fill-ins," culled from the pages of a women’s magazine; "Lucinda and the Birds" was a work of art, and radio perhaps its best medium, since the Irish atmosphere could be delicately and naturally evoked without the regrettable whimsy it assumes in print,
