Young Pepys
WHEN, in a programme last year, , Richard White read extracts, -all too few, from Pepys’s Diary, I wished aloud in these columns that we could hear him in more of the same. I had my wish when Dorothy White’s programme Young Mr. Pepys was heard from 4YA, with P. A. Smithells. as narrator, and Richard White as Samuel Pepys, It is true, as was pointed out in this pro~ gramme, that most readers of the diary refer to its author affectionately but
eral impression is that the diary is that of an elderly man, whereas the writings actually cover many years of Pepys’s life, but introduce him to us as a young man in his twenties. It was this young man of whom Richard White gave us a vivid picture by voice alone-a voice most suited to this particular job-in a teally fine and well-arranged programme. ?
