New and Unusual
[? is a delightful exception in the Dunedin programmes to hear chamber music from the 4YA Studios. When we do get something new, such as the Monheimer Trio, it is doubly attractive to hear the performers tackling a Mozart composition, in this case the trio for clarinet, viola, and piano in E Flat. It would be wrong to. say that the performance was faultless, but the performers would know, as, well as the listener, the particular places where the combination lacked cohesion, a quality which is as much a product of spiritual balance as of technical ability, and which is only to be gained after the players have worked together for a yery long time. The unusual trio combination which includes a clarinet and a viola {instruments whith blend perfectly) may find its repertoire limited, since all "composérs do not have the happy ‘Mozartian knack of scoring for such chamber groups, but it is to be hoped that the Monheimer Trio will be heard again.
