MAN'S RESPONSIBILITIES

Sir,-W. F. Ford sets up some straw dummies in ‘order to enjoy knocking them down; and he makes some unwarrantable assumptions. He declares that Guizot knew nothing of philosophy or theology; that I have not read Niebuhr; that I "like to think that Christianity" etc., and assumes that God has given man free will. In the biographical introduction to Guizot’s History of Civilization we read that: "Philosophy, in particular, had powerful attractions for him." He was also a Calvinist-a sect not unacquainted with theology. My reply to J. L. Jones reveals that I have read Niebuhr-and I may add that I have read other authorities. Nothing in

my first letter justifies Mr. Ford in assuming that "I like to believe etc." I merely quoted Guizot’s belief and my opinion on the assumption that Guizot’s belief was true. As for free will, it is a very big subject. Some recent . writings make one wonder whether we have more free will than the electrons which take up their allotted places (or their chosen places) to constitute the atom.
