ARTS YEAR BOOK.

Sir,-J. C. Beaglehole’s marine metaPhors (in his report on the Arts Year Book) are too tempting to resist. He claims that only a few of the "fish" caught were large. Has he not noticed that some large fish are inedible, many are very ugly, and others, however brightly coloured, aré positively poisonous? He should remember too that some little fish have the most delicate flavour, a delight to the sensitive palate. ' Some fine fish in recent years have intentionally avoided the net, and their absence in the "catch" is a noticeable feature of the book. But J.C.B. does not appear to comment on this. He does suggest, however, that the majority should have been thrown back. This is bold talk from one whose own work is not submitted to such ruthless selection. Would he change his mind if he became a creator instead of a critic?
