Opera in English
HE broadcasts of the NZBS Carmen have brought more forcibly to the attention of listeners the question of opera in English, We are apt to regard opera in our own language as something rather improper, an attitude most Continentals find hard to understand: in Berlin, Carmen is given in German as a matter of course. Carmen in any language is of course a joy, but the tearing of the mystery of a strange language from many operas reveals, not that the operas are so high in musical yalue, as that they are so low in intellectual content. At 9.0 p.m. on Wednesdays ‘the ZB stations present in English Opera for the People. Here we have a sketch of the plot presented as spoken dialogue interspersed with the more notable arias and ensemble numbers. The didlogue has a pleasantly artificial flavour according well with the commonly preposterous opera plots, and the music is well perférmed by fresh young voices. The operas chosen are those which will suffer least from this handling and the whole session is really pleasant. .
