Two Plays
‘TECHNICALLY speaking there was little to choose between Miss Gilderstmith’s Daughter (an NZBS production) and End of Term (BBC), both of which I heard last week from 2YA. And, considered as entertainment, both were excellent. Miss Gildersmith’s Daughter (continued on next page)
(continued from previous page) Was a very human little tafe about an excellent mistress who somewhat resents her excellent Edith’s desertion to marry a handsome stranger met in the park. Miss Gilgersmith’s subsequent discovery that even well-brought-up females are prone to error paves the way for a happy if somewhat augmented reunion. End of Term had as its basis that smooth-worn literary plot;peg, the Man With Only a Few Months to Live. I always love this character, since, whether he chooses to live dangerously or merely get a few home truths off his chest, his complete freedom from the conseqtiences is exhilarating to one, still tightly wrapped in the mortal coil. Friday’s character obliged his audience by doing both, chiefly at the expense of a nauseating headmaster whose entrance line was always "There’s something I wanted to discuss with you, Blank, I have decided..." The experience of hearing him first ticked off, then bumped off, was one I am sure all listeners enjoyed.
