Brightness is All

S it reflected glow from the shining example of 2ZB (Women’s Hour continues plummy) or are the 2YA morning sessions really becoming brighter and better? Last week in the For My Lady session we were treated to a series of exceHent and beautifully told short stories (William* Austin at the micro-phone)-from Monday’s The Minuet, by Maupassant, to Friday’s The Mistake of Madame, by Ethel Fielding. But Thursday, I think, provided. the best listening of the week. The Morning Talk Wanted-A Companion, by Dickon, was the promising first of a series, and, as brightly ironic a piece of as one could find in a listening week. This was followed by the day’s short story The Whispered Roll-Call, by Stephen North, a subtle essay in the macabre which kept me washing the same dish till the worst of the suspense was over. It may ‘not be altogether desirable in the interests of housewifely efficiency for both the Morning Talk and the For My Lady session to be completely ear-filling, but it makes a nice change.
