LILI KRAUS
Sir,-The Broadcasting Service is to be congratulated upon the way in which it has enabled so many thousands of us in the smaller centres to hear this incomparable artist, and as just one of the many I should like to record my appreciation, The silence is like velvet, more profound For all the matchless beauty ringing still In hearts that on the Tampart heights of sound Hove wandered, tasted glory, drunk their 1 Of magic vouchsafed only to the few, Of music long beloved, yet heard anew. The hush fell swiftly, as a curtain drops To veil rare beauty. Rapt hearts stirsagain. For there were trumpets on the mountain tops, And ecstasy that is akin to pain. : Slim, flying hands made one with living keys, A lifetime holds few moments such as these. For there were great winds singing in the hills Exultant storms, and splendid, mounting wings, The haunting beat, the wild. clear song that
thrills A distant land, drawn from enchanted strings By far, brown gipsy fingers, slim and swift, Calling the pulse to leap, the heart to lift. And there were moments, delicate and stilfed, When heart cried out to heart, suddénly The nameless’ onging ‘of the unfulfilled Became a shining, glad reality, © : The keys are still. The world v n again, The magic and the glory wil remain.
