Taking this into consideration, it is clear that, even if the proportion of women to men were twice as great, there would be no cause for alarm as to the efficiency of our staffing. Salaries of Public-school Teachers. The total amount of all salaries and allowances as at the 31st December, 1913, was £692,895. This includes pupil-teachers' salaries and allowances, £30,630; probationers' salaries and allowances, £9,855 ; additional amounts paid to head teachers of district high schools, £1,650 ; and house allowances, £17,135, to head or sole teachers who had no residence provided. However, the total does not include the corresponding amounts saved in rent where houses are provided, estimated at £27,050. The average rates of salary for adult teachers in public primary schools were, — (1.) All schools— 1912. 1913. (a.) If the schools with an average attendance of 15 or less are excluded, the percentage rises to 52-8.
