No. 242, 1890.—Petition of Tbketiu Mahutonga and 6 Others. Petitioners state that a piece of land known as the Kaipo Eeserve (Section 80, Waitotara Block) was repurchased from the Government for the use of their tribe, and granted in trust to certain individuals, the successors of whom now claim the land as their own. They therefore pray for relief. I am directed to report that, as it appears from the papers submitted by the Native Department, and from the evidence of Horopapere Pukeke, the only original grantee now alive, that a trust was implied when the land was granted, the Committee recommend that this petition be referred to the Government, in order that the necessary legislation may be introduced to place the petitioners in the position they pray for.
