Note.—The amounts given in the columns headed " Balance yet to ba paid " in Return No. 2 are the estimated sums, computed generally at the same acreage rate as the payments already made, which would be required to complete the purchase of the blocks supposing the whole of the owners to be willing to sell and tho Government desirous to buy. In cases of payments made before tho passing of the land through the Court the extent of the interest acquired by the Crown cannot be estimated even approximately. For example, in the case of the Waitoa and Piako Block £22,339 has been paid on an estimated area of 200,000 acres, and, although the bulk of the payments were madeover fourteen years ago, it has, so far, been found impracticable to get tho block before the Court to have the interest of the Crown defined. The sums therefore in the columns described, though given as asked for and as estimated above, will, I fear, mislead if they are taken to mean either liabilities on blocks or amounts for which the purchases could be completed.
