Special Report I have the honour to report that the Committee to-day unanimously passed the following resolution, and directed that it be reported to the House :— " That the Native Affairs Committee record its appreciation of the past services of the Honourable James O'Brien. Mr. O'Brien has served on the Native Affairs Committee, except for a small space, since 1923, and for a third of that period as Chairman. " While extending its hearty congratulations to Mr. O'Brien on his elevation to the Cabinet, members regret the consequent loss of his services on the Committee, which, over the years, have been distinguished by his sympathetic understanding of the Maoris and his capable and courteous leadership." 9th March, 1943.

No. 52/1942. —Petition of Tahatera Mohi Tomlins and 3 Others, of Pakipaki Praying for relief from the effect of the will of Pukepuke Tangiora, deceased. l am directed to report that in the opinion of the Committee this petition should be referred to the Government for favourable consideration, with a recommendation that the beneficiaries be represented on the trust and that legislation be promoted to vary the terms of the will in order that the housing and other requirements of the beneficiaries might be provided for out of the accumulated income fund. The Committee further recommends that the Native Trustee should be associated with the administration of Maori estates. 29th June, 1943.

No. 40/1942. —Petition of Hapeta Maitai and 11 Others, of Tolaga Bay Praying for further inquiry regarding certain Paremata Blocks. 1 am directed to report that in the opinion of the Committee this petition should be referred to the Government for favourable consideration. The Committee recommends that legislation be enacted authorizing the Native Land Court to inquire into and, if necessary, redefine the relative shares, but only so far as the interests of the Mataotao are concerned—that is, the persons with slight occupationary rights. 2nd July, 1943.
