Ordered, " That a Select Committee be appointed, consisting of ten members, to consider all petitions from A to L that may be referred to it; to classify and prepare abstracts of sucli petitions in such form and manner as shall appear to it best suited to convey to this House all requisite information respecting their contents, and to report the same from time to time to this House ; and to have power to report its opinions and observations thereon to this House : the Committee to consist of Mr. Ansell, Mr. Healy, Mr. Macpherson, Mr. McDougall, Mr. W. No. 58, Sess. 1, 1932.—Petition of N. W. J. Cotton, of Lower Hut.t. Praying for further relief on account of an accident received while in the employ of the Hutt Valley Electric-power Board. I am directed to report that in the opinion of the Committee the petition should be referred to the Government for most favourable consideration, and the Committee desire to express the. opinion that the petitioner should be compensated to a minimum extent of £500, 17th November, 1932.

Praying for compensation in respect of permanent injuries caused by alleged neglect while under detention by police and prison authorities. I am directed to report that in the opinion of the Committee the petition should be referred to the Government for consideration, and that the Committee considers a more thorough medical examination of prisoners is desirable. 17th November, 1932.
No. 440, Sess. 1, 1932.—Petition of Cygnet Limited, of Christchurch. Praying for compensation for loss incurred owing to the alleged neglect of a servant of the Marine Department. I am directed to report that in the opinion of the Committee the petition should be referred to the Government for favourable consideration ; with the rider to the efiect that the amount prayed for by the petitioner should be refunded. 30th November, 1932.
No. 19, Sess. 2, 1931. —Petition of F. A. DeChateau, of Sydney. Praying for inquiry into alleged wrongful deprivation of property in Wellington. I am directed to report that the Committee has no recommendation to make. 6th December, 1932.
No. 5. —Petition of Alexander Hanna, of Te Mawhai. Praying for refund of conveyance duty. I am directed to report that in the opinion of the Committee the petition should be referred to the Government for favourable consideration. 7th December, 1932.
No. 495, Sess. 1, 1932. —Petition of F. C. Knott, and 16 Others. Praying for reasonable compensation for alleged loss and damage arising out of the recent rioting in Auckland. I am directed to report that in the opinion of the Committee the petition should be referred to the Government for consideration. The Committee also recommends that the Government introduce suitable legislation, on the lines of that existing in other countries, to meet cases such as the present; and that some provision be made therein to deal with cases of proved hardship of those persons who sustained damage in the riot referred to by the petitioners. 14th February, 1933.
No. I.—Petition of Morton Aldis, of Auckland. Praying that a decision of the Government re the constitution of the governing body of the Jubilee Institute for the Blind be given effect to. I am directed to report that in the opinion of the Committee the petition should be referred to the Government for favourable consideration. * 14th February, 1933.

No. 14. —Petition of G. W. Drew, of Auckland. Praying for additional compensation for death of son while employed by the Public Works Department I am directed to report that in the opinion of the Committee the petition should be referred to the Government for most favourable consideration, having regard to the further documentary evidence placed before the Committee which was not given before the Arbitration Court. 14th February, 1933.
No. 238. —Petition of J. W. Garner, of Wellington. Praying for compassionate allowance or other relief in respect of injuries received while employed by the Railways Department. I am directed to report that in the opinion of the Committee the petition should be referred to the Government for most favourable consideration ; and the Committee recommends that it be made compulsory upon all employers to exhibit in prominent positions at their works notices informing employees of the limitations of the Workers' Compensation Act, 1922, for lodgments of claims in respect of injuries. 16th February, 1933.
No. 103. —Petition of Shack Horne, of Wellington. Praying that his son (Luke Shack Horne) be permitted to reside in New Zealand without payment of poll-tax. I am directed to report that in the opinion of the Committee the petition should be referred to the Government for most favourable consideration, in view of the petitioner being a naturalized British subject, his long residence in the Dominion, and the services rendered by him, and also of his son, Willie Shack Horne, having served with the New Zealand Expeditionary Force. 16th February, 1933.
No. 101.—Petition of Joseph Chulav, of Auckland. Praying for compensation for alleged injury received while employed by the Public Works Department. I am directed to report that in the opinion of the Committee the petition should be referred to the Government for most favourable consideration, and the Committee recommends that a small weekly allowance be made to the petitioner for the further period of his disability. 16th February, 1933.
No. 42, Sess. 1, and No. 200. —Petitions of F. J. Beel, of Hyde. Praying for compensation for alleged injury received while employed by the Hyde Unemployment Relief Committee. I am directed to report that in the opinion of the Committee the petitions should be referred to the Government for favourable consideration. 16th February, 1933.
No. 440, Sess. 1, 1932. —Petition of Cygnet Ltd., of Christchurch (Second Report). Praying for reasonable compensation for loss incurred owing to the alleged neglect of a servant of the Marine Department. I am directed to report that as no further evidence has been placed before the Committee, the Committee has no recommendation to make. 23rd February, 1933.
No. 170, Sess. 1, 1932. —Petition of C. E. Gregory, of Invercargill. Praying for. reinstatement in the Railways Department, and compensation for alleged wrongful dismissal. I am directed to report that in the opinion of the Committee the petition should be referred to the Government for favourable consideration ; and the Committee unanimously recommend that the petitioner be allowed to appeal with a view to his reinstatement in his former position. 23rd February, 1933.
No. 20, Sess. 1, 1932.—Petition of A. G. Hughes, of Auckland. Praying for compensation for injuries received in the service of the New Zealand Railways Department, or, alternatively, that his case be allowed to be tried by the Arbitration Court. I am directed to report that in the opinion of the Committee the petition should be referred to the Government for favourable consideration, and the Committee recommends that the Railways Department investigate the petitioner's case with a view of ascertaining if further relief can be granted. 2nd March, 1933.

No. 190, Sess. 2, 1931.—Petition of Albert Wood and 8 Others. Praying for the maintenance of the banks of the Mangaore Stream and the bridges erected thereon by the Public Works Department. I am directed to report that the member presenting the petition having requested permission to withdraw it, the Committee recommends that he be allowed to do so. 3rd March, 1933.
No. 248. —Petition of J. Collins and 56 Others. Praying for amendment of the North Shore Boroughs (Auckland) Water-supply Act, 1924, or other relief. I am directed to report that the Committee has no recommendation to make. 3rd March, 1933.
Special Report. The Committee desires to place on record its high appreciation of the capable and impartial manner in which the Chairman, Mr. E. F. Healy, has presided over its deliberations during the session ; and the Committee further desires that this resolution shall be recorded in the minutes and be reported to the House. J. A. Special Report. The Committee desires to express its appreciation of the capable and efficient service performed by the Clerk, Mr. R. L. Cross, in all branches of his work throughout the session, and it is the wish of the Committee that this resolution shall be recorded in the minutes of the Committee and be reported to the House. 3rd March, 1933.
