Ordered, " That a Select Committee be appointed, consisting of ten members, to consider all petitions from A to L that may be referred to it by the Petitions Classification Comrnitteo ; to classify and prepare abstracts of such petitions in such form and manner as shall appear to it best suited to convey to this House ail requisite information respecting their contents, and. to report the same from time to time to this House ; and to have power to report its opinions and observations thereon to this House ; also to have power to call for persons and papers ; three to be a quorum ; the Committee to consist of Mr. Bartram, Mr. Bitchener, Mr. Brown Mr. Burnett, Mr. Harris, Mr. McNicol, Mr. Mitchell, Dr. Thacker, Mr. Wright, and the mover."—(Hon. REPORTS. No. 179. —Petition of Thomas Black, of Otago. Praying for remission of the " strangers' tax " in the estate of Edmund Hayes (deceased). I am directed to report that the Committee has no recommendation to mate. 20th September, 1922.
No. 148. —Petition of Frederick James Brooks, of Lawrence. Praying for compensation for loss of office as Clerk of Court, Lawrence. 1 am directed to report that the Committee has no recommendation to make. 20th September, 1922.
No. 254.—Petition of George Levi Collins, of Tcmuka. Praying for compensation on account of an accident to his son while a pupil at the Temuka District High School. I am directed to report that, in the opinion of the Committee, compensation should bo paid to the petitioner, and that the petition.be referred to the Government for favourable consideration. 20th September, 1922.
No. of Thomas Charles Duncan, of Auckland. Praying for reinstatement in the Public Service. I am directed to report that, in view of the hardship of the petitioner's case, the Committee recommends that an endeavour be made to find him suitable employment in the Public Service, and in the opinion of the Committee this petition should be referred to the Government for favourable consideration. 20th September, .1.922.
No. 269. Petition of Walter James Entwisle and Alfred Henry Entwisle, of Feilding. PRAYING for remission or reduction of land-tax. I am directed to report that the Committee is of opinion that the land-tax on this property should be assessed as on an individual property, and that the owners should not be called upon to pay the tax assessed on the accumulated properties of the McLean estate ; and that this petition be referred to the Government for favourable consideration. 20th September, 1922.
No. 58. —Petition of the Federated Association of Superannuated Public Servants of New Zealand. Praying for an inquiry into the request that they may be granted a bonus similar to that received by public servants. 1 am directed to report that in the opinion of the Committee the application of the petitioners for an inquiry should be referred to the Government for consideration. 20th September, 1922.
No. 177. Petition of John Milton Goode, of Wellington. Praytng for compensation for services rendered to the Public Service of New Zealand. I am directed to report that the Committee has no recommendation to make. 20th September, 1922.
No. 111. —Petition of Harriett Hussey, of Brooklyn, Wellington. Praying for compassionate allowance owing to the death of her husband. 1 am directed to report that, in view of the fact that the late husband of the petitioner was recommended for permanent employment in the Public Service, and considering his satisfactory record while employed in the Government Printing Office, the Committee is of opinion, that the petitioner should be made some monetary payment by way of compassionate allowance, and that this petition be referred to the Government for favourable consideration, 20th September, 1922.

No. 95. —Petition of John Thompson Large, of Auckland. Praying for payment of Maori war pension which has been withheld owing to his absence from th e Dominion. 1 am directed to report that in the opinion of the Committee this petition should be referred to the Government for favourable consideration, and that clause 10 of the Finance Act, 1920, be made retrospective. 20th September, 1922.
No. 360/11/21. —Petition of James Hughes, of Wellington. Praying for inquiry and relief relative to loss incurred in connection with a land transaction which could not be completed on account of his absence on active service. I am directed to report that as the same petition, presented, this session, has been referred to the Defence Committee, in the opinion of this Committee this petition should be referred to the Defence Committee. 20th September, 1922.
No. 96. —Petition of John R. Ingram, of Wellington. Praying for compensation for extra-long service in the employ of the State. I am directed to report that the Committee has no recommendation to make. 20th September, 1922.
No. 116. —Petition of John James Boyd, of Kilbirnie, Wellington. Praying that he be awarded compensation for the loss incurred by the enforcement of section 45, subsection 1 (d), of the Municipal Corporations Amendment Act, 1913, and that the above subsection be amended or repealed. I am directed to report that in the opinion of the Committee this petition should be referred to the Government for consideration. 27th September, 1922.
No. 238.--Petition of Ernest Douglas Dobson, of Blenheim. Praying for compensation for work at Samoa while he was an officer of the Lands and Survey Department. I am directed to report the Committee, has no recommendation to make. 27th September, 1922. (Referred back for further consideration.)
No. 221. —Petition of Francis William Chapman Haslam, of Havelock North, Hawke's Bay. Praying for compensation for services rendered as honorary secretary of the Ashley Recruiting Committee. I am directed to report that in the opinion of tho Committee this petition should be referred to the Government for consideration. 27th September, 1922.
No. 230.—Petition of C. R. Julian and 5 Others, of Taranaki. Praying that the proclaimed " public road " through Subdivision 5 of Mataikahawai Block be proclaimed to be a " county road." I am directed to report that, the road referred to in the petition having already been proclaimed a " public road," the Committee has no recommendation to make. 27th September, 1922.

Praying for an increase in the military pension he is now receiving from the Imperial Government, to the scale on which New Zealand, military pensions are paid. I am directed to report that the Committee has no recommendation to make. sth October, 1922.
No. 262.—Petition of A. S. Gardner and 32 Others, of Southland. Praying for the removal of the protection of deer in certain districts. I am directed to report that in the opinion of the Committee this petition should be referred to the Government for favourable consideration. 10th October, 1922.
No. 357, Petition of F. W. Attwood and 212 Others, of Nelson ; No. 359, Petition of H. B. Kirk and 4 Others, of Wellington ; No. 364, Petition of James Burnett, of Wellington ; No. 370, Petition of T. B. Williams and 10 Others, of Wanganui. Praying that the Government should contribute financially towards the upkeep of the Cawthron Institute. I am directed to report that in the opinion of the Committee this petition should be referred to the Government for favourable consideration, conditionally upon the trustees of tho Cawthron Institute extending its operation by the additional expenditure of not less than £2,000 per annum in scientific investigations of essentially national importance. 12th October, 1922.
No. 304. —Petition of William Alfred Baldwin, of Palmerston North. Praying for compensation for loss of position in the Labour Department, on account of retrenchment. No. 371.—Petition of Caroline J. Brooke, of Wellington. Praying for a compassionate allowance, or reinstatement in the Education Department. I am directed to report that in the opinion of the Committee the request of the petitioner for a compassionate allowance should be referred to the Government for favourable consideration. 26th October, 1922.
No. 363.—Petition of James S. Douglas and 342 Others, of Otago. Praying that the road from Mossburn to Manapouri and Te Anau be made and repaired, in order that settlers and others may be able to avail themselves of it. I am directed to report that in the opinion of the Committee this petition should be referred to the Government for consideration. 26th October, 1922.
No. 298. —Petition of Martin Michael Lauersen, of Napier. Praying for payment of the amount said to be owing on a public contract for the erection of the Ormondville Post-office. I am directed to report that the Committee has no recommendation to make. 26th October, 1922.

Praying for further inquiry into his claim for compensation for injuries received whilst carrying out his duties as constable in the New Zealand Police Force, further material evidence being available. I am directed to report that in the opinion of the Committee an endeavour should be made to obtain suitable employment in the Public Service for the petitioner, and that this petition be referred to the Government for favourable consideration. 28th October, 1922.
No. 55.—Petition of John Ker, of Auckland. Praying for compassionate allowance for injuries received whilst in tho employ of the Justice Department. I am directed to report that in the opinion of the Committee this petition should be referred to the Government for favourable consideration. 28th October, 1922.
No. 383.—Petition of Henry Alexander Lamb, of Wellington. Praying that a compassionate allowance may be granted to his mother, in recognition of services rendered to the State by her lato husband as Deputy Controller and Auditor-General. I am directed to report that the Committee has no recommendation to make. 28th October, 1922.
Special Report. I have the honour to report that the Committee desires to place on record its high appreciation of the capable and impartial manner in which the Chairman, Mr. Wright, has presided over its deliberations during the session. James Horn, 28th October, 1922. Member of Committee.
