Return to an Order of the House of Representatives dated the 19th October, 1910. Ordered, " That there be laid before this House a return relative to tlio 4,282,284 acres of Crown lands remaining for future disposal (vide Table 1, Lands Keport, 1910), showing—(l) The class of land; (2) the provincial districts within which situated ; and (3) the approximate value of the land."—(Mr. Fishbb.)

Auckland Acres. 1,295,859 £ <J60,360 About 88,067 acres of firet-class land, of whioh 4,000 acres is forest land and 2,000 acres open land of good quality, undulating to slightly broken ; 4,141 acres drained kahikatea swamp ; and 77,926 acres good drained swamp, mostly open. 762,084 acres second-class land : 516,170 acres forest land of fair quality, mostly broken country, suitable for sheep, with a considerable quantity of milling-timber on portions; 233,214 acres fern and manuka land suitable for general farming ; 12,700 acres swamp, being drained. 191,805 acres third-olass land : 106,389 acres is broken forest land without present means of access, but, when roaded, part may become classed as second-class land; 85,416 acres fern and manuka land, undulating to broken, about half gum land, heavy clay soil, balance pumioe soil with some tussock. 253,903 acres pastoral land : sandhills and poor pumice land which can only be worked in areas of 10,000 acres or in conjunction with adjoining farms. About 3,131 acres of first-class land, consisting of 3,098 acres of heavy mixedbush land of good-quality, and 33 acres of open country of good quality. 24,781 acres of second-class land, varying from an undulating to a high broken nature, and mostly bush-clad, ranging from heavy to light bush, the soil being light to good in quality. 100,126 acres of pastoral land, mostly of a high, rough, broken character, suitable for subdivision into holdings of 1,000 acres to 30,000 acres. About 49,454 acres of first-class land ; 228,773 acres of second-class land ; 23,819 acres first- and second-class land : 8,731 acresungazetted reserves : principally in heavy forest and of a rough nature, some small portions of easier and better country, and in the Waitomo and Ohura Counties areas of fern and light-bush land. About 37,795 acres first-olass land; 227,588 acres second-class land ; 7,000 acres comprise level and undulating land; 218,000 acres rough and broken country, mostly under heavy bush; the balance of the area is inferior land at a high altitude and suitable only for pastoral purposes. 156,740 acres, praotically all second-class land, suitable for close settlement, mostly bush-clad hills. 1,066,600 acres pastoral country, mostly rough, broken, bush-clad hills. 47,704 aores, practically all suitable for subdivision for close settlement; 22,284 aores second-class land ; balance third-class. 121,936 acres available for pastoral purposes only. Vestland Acres. £ 83,757 27,628 About 26,757 acres second-class land ; fair land, carrying sawmilling timber, part of whioh is being worked by sawmillers. 57,000 acres of third-class land: 25,000 acres swampy land, difficult of drainage and of poor quality ; 5,000 acres auriferous land, part of which is being worked, and of which part has been worked by miners; 27,000 acres spurs and sidelings carrying timber, not accessible to sawmillers, generally of poor quality. The 66,000 acres is situated in the Catlin's district, and consists of rough, broken, bush land, the soil generally being light and poor. About 20,000 aores first-class land, chiefly bush-clad, undulating; soil, fair to good and well watered; suitable for cultivation when cleared of timber. 356,555 acres seoond-class land, chiefly bush-clad ; 65 per cent, undulating, 35 per cent, broken and steep ; soil, 35 per cent, poor, 65 per cent, fair; all well watered; small portion suitable for cultivation, mostly pastoral.
