1908. NEW ZEALAND.
EDUCATION: NATIVE SCHOOLS (PARTICULARS RELATING TO).
Return to an Order of the House of Representatives dated the 7th August, 1908. Ordered, " That there be laid before this House a return showing (1) the number and names of Native schools opened in the Drewera district; (2) the number of children on the roll at each of such schools for each year since 1900; (3) tho average attendance at each school for the same period; and (4) the number of schools closed, and reasons for closing same."—(Mr. Ngata.)

(a) The Waimana Native School was closed in 1907 owing to removal of the Waimana Natives to Bua's settlement at Maungapohatu. (6) The school at Te Houhi was closed in 1905, the school being held in private buildings standing on a block of land known as the Waiohau No. 1 Block. The ownership of the block was the subject of litigation between the Natives and a European named Beale, resulting in the Natives being dispossessed of the land and buildings. (c) The Awangararanui (Galatea) Native School was closed in 1904 on account of the poor and irregular attendance. (d) The Kokako Native School was closed in 1900 owing to the small attendance and to the apathy of the Natives. Note.—For the half-year ending 30th June, 1908, the schools with their rolls and average attendances are as follows :— School. Roll. Average.
