Ordered, " That a Committee be appointed, consisting of ten members, to examine and report on questions relating to the railways, with power to call for persons and papers; three to be a quorum : the Committee to consist of Mr. Arnold, Mr. Hogan, Mr. Lawry, Mr. Massey, Mr. Hardy, Mr. Ross, Mr. Sidey, Mr. Witty, Mr. Wood, and the mover."—(Right Hon. No. 121.—Petition of Gboege Swarm Ross, Riccarton, Christchurch. Petitionee prays for compensation for invention of protection-plate in locomotive-boilers. I am directed to report that this petition has been referred to the Government for consideration. 27th August, 1907.

No. 201.—Petition of Mrs. Jennie Lewis, Clyde Quay, Wellington. Petitionee prays for a monetary allowance on account of her late husband's services in the Railway Department. I am directed to report that this Committee desires to express its sympathy with the petitioner, and refers the petition to the Government for consideration, and respectfully suggests to the Government the advisability of making provision in such cases. 27th August, 1907.

No. 76.—Petition of Chaeles Hall. Petitionee prays for relief on account of injuries received .while working on the railways. I am directed to report that this Committee has no recommendation to make. 27th August, 1907.

No. 20.—Petition of C. H. Veeitt and 118 Others. Petitionees pray that a fence be erected between the railway and the Washdyke Road. I am directed to report that this Committee has no recommendation to make. 27th August, 1907.

No. 87.—Petition of Thomas Walsh. Petitionee prays for an allowance for services rendered on the New Zealand railways, and having to retire through an accident received during the execution of his duties. I am directed to report that this Committee has no recommendation to make. 27th August, 1907.

Nos. 214, 215, 216, and 217.—Petitions of Alexandee McCune, W. H. Newall and 188 Others, H. Scones and 227 Others, and John Sheewin and 99 Others, Tramway Employees. Petitionees pray for certain concessions in the railway fares. I am directed to report that this Committee has no recommendation to make. 27th August, 1907. Debate on question, " That Report do lie upon the Table," interrupted by 5.30 adjournment.

No. 279.—Petition of Robeet Washington, Rangitata, Canterbury. Petitionee prays for compensation for damage to property caused by sparks from engines. I am directed to report that this Committee has no recommendation to make. 30th August, 1907.

No. 300.—Petition of William Conyers, 483 Collins Street, Melbourne. Petitionee prays for a compassionate allowance. I am directed to report that this Committee has no recommendation to make. 3rd September, 1907.

No. 292.—Petition of Samuel Vaile. Petitionee prays for a trial of the stage system on the New Zealand railways. I am directed to report that, in the opinion of the Committee, this petition should be referred to the Government for consideration 13th September, 1907.

No. 272.—Petition of Geobqe Kieby, Burlington Street, Sydenham, Christchurch. Petitioner prays for relief on account of his services in the Railway Department. I am directed to report that, in the opinion of the Committee, this petition should be referred to the Government for consideration 13th September, 1907.

No. 540.—Petition of James Deuohrass, Dunedin. Petitioner prays for a compassionate allowance for injuries received through being thrown from a railway-carriage while travelling by express train from. Dunedin to Christchurch. I am directed to report that, it having been reported to the Committee that a settlement has been made in connection with this petition, the Committee has no recommendation to make. Bth October, 1907.

No. 615.—Petition of Percival G. Lee, Green Lane, Auckland. Petitioner prays that Green Lane, on the Auckland-Penrose line, be made a station instead of a flag station, and also a post and telegraph office. I am directed to report that, in the opinion of the Committee, this petition should be referred to the Government for consideration. Bth October, 1907.

No. 667.—Petition of John Scott. Petitioner prays for compensation for loss sustained through injury received while in the railway service. I am directed to report that this Committee has no recommendation to make on this petition. Bth October, 1907.

No. 692.—Petition of John D. Cooper, Christchurch. Petitioner prays for further compensation on account of injury caused by a railway accident at Kaitoke on the 30th December, 1904. I am directed to report that this Committee has no recommendation to make. 18th October, 1907.

No. 417.—Petition of C. R. Price and 174 Others, Christchurch. Petitionees pray that something be devised to abate the smoke nuisance from railway-engines near C'arlyle and Madras Street bridges. I am directed to report that, in the opinion of the Committee, this petition should be referred to the Government for consideration. Bth November, 1907.

No. 830.—Petition of James Jackson, St. Kilda. Petitioner prays for further compensation in respect of injuries received while in Government employ. I am directed to report that, in the opinion of the Committee, this petition should be referred to the Government for consideration. 14th November, 1907.

Nos. 378 and 662 (1906). —Petitions of J. E. Bone and A. S. Allan. Petitionees pray that the Otago Harbour Board be paid full compensation in connection with the taking of lands for railway purposes. I am directed to report that, in compliance with a request made on behalf of the petitioners, further consideration of the petitions be held over until next session. 15th November, 1907.
