MEN EMPLOYED ON RELIEF-WORKS IN THE COLONY (RETURN OF).
Return to an Order of the House of Representatives, dated the loth August, 1890. Ordered, " That there be laid before this House a return showing (1) the number of men at present, and tho number who have been at the end of each month, employed upon relief-works in the colony, during the period commencing with the 31st March, 1889, and terminating with the 31st May, 1890 ; (2) the districts in which such men have been and are at present employed ; (3) the character of the work upon which they have been engaged; (4) the terms upon which they are employed in each district; and (5) the amount of money expended in each provincial district during the period referred to for the aforesaid object."—(Mr. Goldie.)
Return showing the Number of Men at present employed on Relief-works in the Colony of New Zealand, and the Number who have been employed at the End of each Month, from the 31st March, 1889, to the 31st May, 1890; showing also the Districts in which the Men were employed, the Character of the Work done, the Terms on which the Men were employed, and the Amount spent in each Provincial District on the aforesaid Object.
The amount of money expended in each provincial district from the 31st March, 1889, to the 31st May, 1890, was—Marlborough, £1,334 6s. sd. ; Canterbury, £1,165 10s. sd. ; Otago, £8,690 9s. 5d.: total, £11,190 6s. 3d. £100 was also expended through Waitemata County Council, but no particulars as asked for can be given. 1 Approximate Cost of Paper.—Preparation, £1 ; printing (1,200 copies), 17s. 6d.]
