1889. NEW ZEALAND.
SINKING FUNDS.
REPORT AND ACCOUNTS OF THE COMMISSIONERS OP THE PUBLIC DEBTS SINKING FUNDS FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31st MARCH, 1889.
Presented to both Houses of the General Assembly in compliance with the 6th Section of "The Public Debts Sinking Funds Act, 1868." EEPOET. Wellington, 9th July, 1889. Thk Commissioners of the Public Debts Sinking Funds have the honour to lay before Parliament the accounts of their transactions for the year ended the 31st March last. It will be observed that the sinking fund of the New Zealand Loan of 1860 now amounts to £80,318 19s. 7d., taking at their nominal value the securities in which the fund is invested. The outstanding debentures, £74,100, for the redemption of which the fund was created, fall due on the Ist July, 1891; and as the amount now accrued, together with the interest to accrue on the investments, will far more than suffice to pay off the debentures at their due date, the Commissioners have agreed to a cessation of further contributions of sinking fund from the Government on account of this loan. The Waitara Harbour Board still fails to meet the periodical interest and sinking fund falling due on its debentures for £15,650, the annual charge in respect of which is 7 per cent, per annum. In view of the Board's position the Commissioners have under consideration a proposal to effect some reduction in the rate, which will partly relieve the Board from its embarrassment, and with economic management will, it is hoped, enable it to meet its engagements. E. C. Hamekton, Chairman.
