Bureau of the German Zollverein. Since its abolition, they have appeared in the official publications of the Imperial Statistical Department (Quarterly Reports on the Statistics of the German Empire, published by the Imperial Statistical Department, Berlin). The most important data respecting the development of the German beet-root sugar industry, since a duty was imposed upon it, are given in the Quarterly Report contained in Vol. viii., Part 1. Amongst them we find accounts of the number of factories devoted to the manufacture of raw sugar, between the years 1840^41 and 1872-73. In the same Report, Vol. viii., S. vi., 124, the results of the manufacture of beet-sugar for the year 1873-74, and in Vol. xiv. those for 1874-75, are given. From these publications, which contain the reports on all the different countries comprised within the Zollverein, the enclosed table relating to Bavaria has been compiled. 2. As regards the import and export, and the duties on beet-root sugar of home manufacture, there are no special data for Bavaria, any more than there are regarding the production of such sugar. The only existing data refer to the whole of the Zollverein. The information on this head is also given in the publications of the original Central Bureau of the German Zollverein. Reports on the duties, imports and exports, drawbacks, &c, on sugar, for the years 1874 and 1875, are especially to be found in Vol. viii., S. 40, and following sections of the Quarterly Reports. (See Vols. named under heading 1, viz. viii and xiv.)
