NATIONAL CANDIDATE
BAY OF PLENTY CONTEST (Special to Times) WHAKATANE, Thursday The official National Party candidate for the Bay of Plenty seat will be Mr W. Sullivan, of Whakatane, who was the only nominee. The byelection was made necessary by the death overseas of Lieutenant A. G. Hultquist. Mr Sullivan, •who is 49, was beaten by 169 votes by Lieutenant Hultquist in the 1938 general election. Born in Taranaki, he came to the Bay of Plenty district in 1913 and is a member of a well-known contracting firm which has erected important buildings throughout the district. Mr Sullivan was Mayor of Whakatane for 13 years, being elected unopposed on each occasion. He was also chairman of the Harbour Board and has been prominent in practically all other public activities in the district. He is the father of seven children, and his eldest son is just completing his training as a pilot in the Air Force.
