ORDERS, NEW AND OLD

(To the Editor) Sir, —Every now and then the leaders of world affairs seem to fix upon a word or slogan to explain happenings and events. At one time it was, “Let’s have a formula,” then “encirclement and appeasement” grew largely in the public mind. Now we are asked to consider a new caption: “Let’s have a new order.” Hitler wants one, the socialists want one, and so do bishops. These ideologies lead to disastrous results, because each of the advocates thinks he is a top dog and has the best to give us. Adolf points to his “strength through joy” movement and his domesticated womenfolk; emancipation of the world from “hideous Jewish financiers,” etc. It is remarkable that we look for something that we hope to put the world right, yet we do not consider that the solution is here, and has been here for nigh 2000 years. We call this solution a religion, but it is a Way and a Life. It contains the Truth, and it is a gift. We waste many hours thinking out solytions by the score, through reforms of finance, economics, politics, etc., yet the beacon light shines clearly from the heart of Europe for all to see; yet we pass it by and stupidly worry about new orders and systems.—l am, etc., WATCHMAN. Hamilton, March 18.
