WAIKATO WOOL

RECORD LIKELY INCREASE IN PAYMENTS RESULTS OF SIXTH APPRAISAL Waikato wool growers are expected to receive a record cheque for the season’s clip. Cheques for the sixth appraisement held in Auckland at the end of February have been paid and they total £305,851, bringing the gross proceeds from wool in the Auckland Province for the season to date to £1,488,143. This figure compares with £1,375,086 received for the whole of last season’s clip. However, there is still the final appraisement to take place on April 1 and consequently the total cheque should exceed the record cheque of £1,528,545 paid out in 1936-37. Official The official return for the sixth appraisement issued by the secretary of the Auckland Wool Brokers’ Association, Mr J. E. Connor, yesterday showed that 17,881 bales of a net weight of 6,346,2751 b. were appraised. The average price was £l7 2s Id a bale and 11.57 d per lb. Results of the six appraisals compare as follows:

85,174 Bales Appraised Altogether 85,174 bales have been appraised, approximately 2000 more than were handled last season. Before the war auctions would not be finished in Auckland before the end of March and final payments would not be made until April. The fact that the British Government has provided payment for the wool submitted has made the rapid realisations possible. Under normal conditions the market could not absorb such large quantities so rapidly. A very short time now remains to Waikato growers who wish to have wool appraised this season. Farmers who have clips available are urged not to delay in sending them to brokers’ stores if they want them to be submitted to the final appraisement on April 1.
