CLINCH (MAKES AMENDS SOFTLY BEATB BRAZEN BOLD LA.NDVEYOR WINS NARROWLY The weather was line and there was a large attendance al Paeroa on Saturday lor the opening- day or the O'uinernuri Jockey Club's Autumn meeting, when features of the racing were the success of Clinch in the Cup and that of Softly in the open sprint. The hurdles and steeplechase were won by Cappy and llunover respectively. The track was in excellent order and racing or a good standard was witnessed throughout. Chain Acre, who was unluckily beaten at Pukekohe recently, made amends when no finished on to score narrowly from the improving Corot, who also came home well. Golden Pam went to the lead from the outset, and she led along the hack from Venture, Paymaster, Hunto, Karatoki, Chain Acre, Surpai and Corot. The order remained much the same at the naif-mile except that Surpai and Maxown, on the outer, were Improving their positions. Paymaster ran to the front approaching the turn and he straightened up In front o; Venture. Hunto and Chain Acre. Half way down Chain Acre sorted himself out and he went on to win by a neck from Corot with Venture two lengths away. Paymaster was practically in line fourth with Karatoki, Acreman and Hunto next. The Awapuni trained Hanover led from end to end in the cross-country evgnt, Fleur D’Or and Kaiwaka, who had followed him practically throughout, filling the minor places. Count Roussillon ran ofT at the first rence or the double the first time and was not persevered with, Hanover being followed at mis stage by Fleur D’Or with a gap of -ix lengths to Kaiwaka. Riotus and Conflagration. As they came round again the held was well strung oul. Sylv England being pulled up after scrambling over the double. Roxy went at the sod wall along the back and Hanover was clear Into the straight from Fleur DOr, Kaiwaka and Riotous. Nothing had a chance with the favourite In the run home and he won by six lengths from Fleur D’Or with a length to Kaiwaka. Then at a gap or about 30 lengths came Riotous and Conflagration and a further Interval to Floodlight, Smiling Thru and Leighton Buzzard. Time, 4.46. ST. The open sprint provided an exciting finish In which the pronounced favourite, Itrazcn Bold. Just failed to overhaul the well-supported Sortly. Corato, Miss Te Koura and Ngawiri were early prominent, Ngawiri taking up the lead along the back from Miss Te Koura, Corato, Brazen Bold, Softly and Paxeno. Racing to the turn Sortly ran up behind Miss Te Koura and Paxeno and the trio was followed closely by Brazen Bold and Corato. Softly nit the front from half-way down the running, but was all out to hold off Brazen Bold, who ran her to a head. Paxeno was another head away third with Miss Te Koura fourth and Corato and Ngawiri next. Time, 1.13 1-5.

Landveyor, who nad been working attractively on tiie tracks, ran right up lo that promise when he prevailed in another spectacular finish with Lord Ace and Loch Acre. Lord Ace took up the running with a furlong and along the back made play trom Loch Acre, Onetea and Biddy Girl. \t the half-mile Onetea was right on the quarters of Lord Ace and this pair led Landveyor, and Biddy Girl Lord Ace showed the way to the home turn but weakened in the last little bit and l.andveyor wore him down to get the decision bv a neck with Loch Acre a further bead away third. Joyvaals was fourth with Royal Son and Onetea next. Time, 1.14.
