RIVAL CANDIDATES
WELLINGTON MAYORALTY FEAR OF SPLITTING VOTES j (By Telegraph.— Press Association) ] WELLINGTON, Friday | A resolution that Mr M. F. Luckie j be asked to proceed with his Candida- ; ture for the mayoralty of Wellington was carried by a meeting of his committee after he had reviewed the negotiations that had taken place with a sub-committee of the Rate- ; payers’ Association for the selection , of an official citizens’ candidate. j The committee holds that having j given 26 years of service as a councillor, including 10 years as deputyMayor, Mr Luckie has a strong claim ; on the electors. His consent to stand : was obtained before Mr T. C. A. His- j lop announced “his intention of | clinging to office,” and therefore if Mr Hislop went to the poll he alone j would be responsible for the split- J ting of the anti-Labour vote. j Mr Luckie has stated that as far i as he is concerned he is prepared to ! allow the matter of choosing a candidate to be submitted to an impartial tribunal of citizens, provided Mr Hislop agrees to do the same.
