Some 8000 men and women volunteers have been trained in special duties in connection with air raids, and transport provided its own “army defence ” by a Home Guard organisation over 15,000 strong for manning and protecting vulnerable parts of the transport system. The report recalls that in September, 1939, the transport of over 600,000 persons from London to the reception areas was carried out by the board’s undertakings without a single mishap. Of over 12,000 members of the staff serving with the forces 72 have been killed or have died on active service. One hundred and sixteen employees have been killed and 322 injured as a result of enemy action while on duty.
