RED CROSS SOCIETY
MEETINGS IN HAMILTON MISS TENNANT’S VISIT A meeting of delegates of the Waikato Centre of the New Zealand Red Cross Society was held at the Ward Street depot, when Mr A. E. Gibbons presided over an attendance of 40 delegates. Reference was made to the forthcoming visit on March 18 of Miss Tennant, the Director of the V.A.D. Movement in New Zealand. It was decided that the name of. Mrs Westmacott, of Otorohanga, should be submitted as Assistant Centre Commandant. The Hamilton sub-centre of the Red Cross Society also held a meeting, when Mr F. W. Course presided. It was announced that supplies of goods had been sent to the Hopu Hopu Hospital but chairs for the institution were still wanted. The secretary, Mr A. G. Ward, was instructed to write to the Hamilton Borough Council and thank it for its donation of 15 guineas toward the society’s funds. A committee was set up to consider Mr Ward's suggestion that the depot should be made available every Saturday night for a dance, at which soldiers might be entertained by members of the society, the Order of St. John, nurses and the Women’s Auxiliary Corps. A committee was also appointed to examine the proposal of preparing the depot as a hospital post in connection with the E.P.S. The society decided to instal in emergency chest and two beds in the Garden Place shop.
