WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

HOROTIU The Horotiu Women’s Institute held its annual meeting recently, Mrs Paddy, the president, presiding over a fair attendance. The election of •officers took place, the president, treasurer and secretary being reelected. A minute’s silence was observed in memory of a local man who paid the supreme sacrifice. Miss Diver won the points prize for the year. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mrs Washer, Mrs Toulson and Miss Hall. The Institute has arranged to hold a bring-and-buy sale on Saturday, March 22, for Institute funds. OHINEWAI The Ohinewai Women’s Institute held its annual meeting recently. The retiring president, Mrs C. Hill, was presented with a clock, and Mrs Ridgley, who is leaving the district, was given a small gift in appreciation of her service to the Institute. The competition, “Union Jack in flowers,” was won by Mrs Burroughs, and the best bloom was won by Miss Burbush. Five soldiers’ parcels were dispatched. WARDVILLE Mrs Schaare presided over the February meeting of the Wardville Women's Institute. Owing to the wet day # the attendance was much smaller than usual. The motto for the j afternoon was “ Be proud enough to :be humble,' 1 and the roll call, “Garden. hints,” brought forth some very j useiul information. There was an enthusiastic response from members when they were asked to provide three more parcels for the soldiers overseas. Nominations were received for the coming year’s committee, Mrs Schaare being returned unopposed as president. Competitions resulted as follows: Ginger nuts, Mrs Hughes and Mrs J StaiK (equal) 1, Mrs schaare 2, Mrs • Elliott 3; covered coat nanger, Mrs Stark 1, Miss Elliott 2, Mrs Hughes 3; best flower, Miss Elliott 1, Mrs A. Hughes 2, Mrs Hughes 3. Mrs Wallace carried out the duties of hostess. HORSHAM DOWNS The annual meeting of the Horsham Downs Womens Institute was held recently, Mrs Fulton presiding. The secretary read the report of the work undertaken during the past year, which covered knitting and parcels for the soldiers, 452 articles for refugees, as well as other patriotic work. A financial report was read by the treasurer. The points prize was won by Mrs Cunningham, junr., ! who also won the flower competij tion. The appeal for eggs for the : Carrie Hostel resulted in two dozen i being handed in. A collection was , also made for soldiers’ parcels.
