“TREMENDOUS SHORTAGE”
MEN FOR THE FARMS MAX-POWER COMMITTEE’S DECISION I (Special to Times.) CAMBRIDGE, Wednesday | At a sitting* or the Hamilton Manpower c.ijmniittee at Cambridge this week the chairman, Mr S. C. B. Macky, stateC that there was a tremendous shortage o' firm hands. The chairman's comment arose out of an appeal lodged b\ the Director of National Services against the departure or lan William Brunekill for overseas service. Brtinskill. who is a sheepTarmeir, employed by bis father, Mr W. s. Brunskill, of Whitehall, is a territorial who volunteered for overseas service. The board decided that he would have to stay on the larrti, but three months’ territorial training would b>* arranged for him ir he could fit it in with the rann work. The cjmmittec’s opinion was that these men were more valuable on the farms than on active service. It was admitted that the recruit could shear 100 sheep a day and the reservists rather, Mr W. S. Brunskill. said that Ins other son was already surving. ‘•There is a duty lor men to produce as much as possible,” said the secretary,. Mr P. J. Gallagher. *ir a man replaces you, someone else will go short.” The committee expressed its appreciation or the recruits’ attitude, and stated that if the time came when he was needed more overseas than at home the position would be reviewed. In the meantime he hail to stay on the rarm. It was pointed out that a preeedent would be created if be were allowed to go. other farmers who had been held back, *vould then demand to be released.
