IRON RATIONS

READY FOR EMERGENCY SCHEME IN HAMILTON LIST PREPARED The advisability of all householders in inland districts such as Hamilton to prepare for eventualities was referred to by the Mayor, Mr H. D. Caro, to-day. He safti that circumstances had occurred making it desirable to take reasonable steps to cope with emergencies arising out of the state of war. Most housewives had supplies of foodstuffs on hand, in the normal course of their housekeeping, but the Emergency Precautions Committee had approved what might be known as “iron rations,” with a recommendation that every household should purchase a supply of the goods mentioned. In explaining the reason for this recommendation Mr Caro said possibly the people of the seaport cities and towns may have to be evacuated, and the great influx of people into the inland districts would, it was considered, create congestion and a rush on food supplies, occasioning delays and avoidable inconveniences if preparation was made beforehand. Thus all evacuees could, at least, be fed, without imposing an undue strain on local supplies. The rations list had been carefully compiled, and each item was one of the well-known commodities in common use, with good food value, and not expensive, said Mr Caro. The list was as follows: Oatmeal, bag; sago, 21b; rice, 21b; flour, 12£H> bag; candles, lib packet, sugar, 61to; tea, £lb; salt, 51b bag; and condensed milk, lib tin. Mr Caro added that the committee recommended that when these supplies had been obtained they should be packed in a special box and put well out of the way, so that they would be drawn on only in case of emergency indicated above.
