RED CROSS GALA DAY
GORDONTON EFFORT Crowds thronged the Gordonton Hall last Saturday afternoon and evening, when a gala day was organised by the Gordonton-Puketaha-Piako Road branch of the Red Cross Society. This proved highly sue- j cessful in every department. Excellent entries were received, the decorative class making an outstanding note of colour. Some beautiful handwork was displayed on the sewing stall, and the preserves and vegetable classes were well filled. The bring-and-buy stall did brisk business, and competitions held were well patronised. 1 In all classes of the children’s section there was an excellent display, and a very high standard of work was exhibited. Dean Weatherhog officially opened the fair, commenting on the urgent . need for Red Cross funds and the most worthy ideals it upheld. Stewards were as follows:—Flowers: Mesdames N. Taylor and H. Cle- j land. Sewing: Mesdames C. Clark : and L. Drummond. Cooking: Mes- [ dames B. Duncan and A. Gower. Preserves: Mrs P. Thomsen. Com- ; petitions: Mrs C. Seddon. Vegetables: Miss I. Mayall. Children’s section: Miss M. McLean. Ice cream: Mesdames A. Baker and R. Burrett. Bring and buy: Mesdames P. Laidlaw, G. Saxton, C. Plill and P. Edwards. During the afternoon the opportunity was taken to make a presentation to Mr Barney Roto who was on leave. Speaking on behalf of residents, Mr F. Williamson wished Mr Roto good luck and asked him to accept an eversharp pencil. With good wishes from Red Cross members, Mrs D. Riddell handed him a hand-knitted pullover. Musical honours were then accorded the guest-of-honour, who suitably expressed his thanks. Competitions occupied the first part of the evening. When supper was served dancing commenced. Mrs W. Mexted supplied the dance music. The president, Mrs D. Riddell, announced the prize-winners, and cordially thanked all helpers and supporters for their able assistance.
