AUTUMN EXHIBITION

WAIKATO SOCIETY OF ARTS ILLUSTRATED LECTURE I Hamilton is well on the way to be--1 coming known for its art consciousness and appreciation of fine pictures and this was evidenced by the large number of members and their friends 1 who att-'.juea ihe autumn exhibition of the Waikato Society of Arts held in the National Club Hall last night. Hamilton artists are to be congratul lated on the excellence of the exhi- . bition, which was the subject of much 1 admiring comment, and which is giv- [ ing so much pleasure to all lovers of art, especially in these troublous times. In opening the exhibition, the prer sident, Mr J. Treloar, spoke of the 0 need to widen the horizon toward art 3 and to exclude any form of snob- £ bishness. “ There is so much to learn,” he said, “ about art, and our 1 ability and time are so limited in j comparison with the vast amount of t knowledge to be gained, that we can- » not afford to be snobbish.” He ini stanced for example the simple and r often crude materials, such as earth, i minerals, etc., which, when refined, l are the colours used by artists to crel ate their beautiful pictures. The ; danger of limiting the application of i the word “ art ” was also stressed by ; i Mr Treloar, in speaking of the time, [ I not far distant, when men who cre- ■ ate, no matter in what sphere they . ! work, will receive the recognition due r to them, and will be proud of their j craft. [ I Mr Treloar concluded by speaking , j of the healthy condition of the soci- . ; ety, which now numbers some 150 members, of whom 50 are working members, 50 students and 50 honj orary members. ’ ' After the serving of supper a most j interesting lecture by Mr Sidney L. j Thompson, 0.8.
