YOUTH OF EMPIRE
HIGH TRIBUTE PAID BY GOVERNOR-GENERAL ENTHUSIASM AND COURAGE (By Telcgrapn.—Press Association) CHRISTCHURCH, Saturday High tributes to the youth of the Empire were expressed by the Gov-ernor-General, Sir Cyril Newall, when replying to a civic welcome accorded him by citizens of Christchurch this morning. Sir Cyril and Lady Newall were accorded a most enthusiastic reception. “The future of a nation or an empire must at all times depend upon its youth, and this is especially true of the British Empire today,” said Sir Cyril. “I have spoken already of our tremendous debt to the young airmen who have so nobly defended the Motherland and so bravely carried the attack into the centre of the enemy’s country, but it is not only in battle that we depend upon our youth. They will have an all-import-ant part to play when victory is won. “The young men fighting now have answered once and for all, I hope, the everlasting complaint of the older generation that the youth of today is inferior to the youth of yesterday. I have seen them myself at close quarters and no praise can be too high for their achievements. We are relying on them now when we are hard-pressed. “Let us remember this and give youth its full scope when the enemy has been defeated. Youth means progress, enthusiasm, courage and determination, and it is these qualities that we require in all our undertakings.” VISIT TO CHRISTCHURCH (8y Telegraph.—Press Association) CHRISTCHURCH, Sunday The Governor-General, Sir Cyril Newall, and Lady Newall, arrived from Wellington yesterday morning on their first visit to the South Island.
