HORSES FOR WAIOURU

ASSEMBLED AT CLAUDELANDS SPECIAL TRANSPORT TRAINS Three special trains conveying horses for use at the military camp at Waiouru are due at Claudelands, with an aggregate of upwards of 650 horses during the week-end. The animals will be taken off the trains to rest for several hours before proceeding to Waiouru. One special train, coming from Taneatua and Bay of Plenty districts, is due to arrive at Claudelands at 10 o’clock to-night, with approximately 200 horses. A few hours later a train will reach Claudelands from Rotorua and way stations with further 200 horses, while a third special train is due from Taneatua on Monday night with 230 horses. These latter go forward to Waiouru on Tuesday. The task of feeding these horses is by no means a minor one, and for the past week officers of the Army Department have been very busy arranging for supplies of chaff, oats, and hay. The horses will also have to be exercised, watered and returned to their lines. Helping the soldiers in charge will be a party of the National Reserve, Hamilton unit, who will carry out guard duties in relays. Captain S. E. McNamara is in charge of the arrangements throughout the No. 4 (Hamilton) Military Area.
