CLIMBING RECORD
THREE PEAKS REACHED *TORT IN ONE DAY (By Tclcgr.ph.—Press Association) WELLINGTON, Friday A time record in climbing Mt. Ruapehu, Mt. Ngauruhoe and Mt. Tongariro in one day was made by Private A. F. Young, of Trentham, on Wednesday. He left the Chateau at 2.10 a.m. and was back by 6.50 p.m., taking 16 hours 40 minutes. He took a professional guide, Mr Kirk Johnson, to the highest peak of Ruapehu and then* on to the northern peak, Te Heu Heu. From Te Heu Heu he went alone to the peaks of Ngauruhoe and Tongariro. Conditions were excellent for climbing and the views were glorious. The best time record previously was that of Guide Esdaile, who completed the journey some months ago in 19 hours, stated Mr L. J. Bayfleld, manager of the Government tourist bureau at the Chateau in forwarding the particulars of Private Young’s feat. The three peaks were climbed in one day by a woman for the first time when Miss Ngai Horton, of Wellington, recently made the trip in 22 hours.
