HOMER TUNNEL WORK DELAY IN OPENING (By Telegraph.—Press Association) INVERCARGILL, Wednesday The approximate date on which the Homer Tunnel will be open for motor traffic through the Milford Sound is very indefinite owing to the war having created a shortage of supplies of essential materials for completing the boring work. The Hon. R. Semple, who was Minister of Public Works during the period when much of the construction work was carried out, stated today that the work on the tunnel had been speedy until the war broke out, but since then boring vvork had been comparatively slow.” The shortage of new equipment became evident soon after the outbreak of the war and the Public Works Department had been able to get only two Diesel jumps instead of four. There was little or no steel for boring, and the work was further slowed up by competent men going away on active service. Work on the tunnel would still go on, unless some national crisis arose, added the Minister.
