LOCAL BODY POLLS

ELIMINATING " TICKETS ” MOVE BY CONFERENCE CITIES OPPOSE REMIT (By Telegraph.—Press Association) AUCKLAND, Wednesday By a majority of 64 votes to 32 the Municipal Association conference today carried a remit that section 44 (B) of the Local Elections and Polls Act, 1925, which makes it an offence to print, distribute or deliver on the day of polling or during the preceding three days an imitation of the voting paper together with directions as to the method of voting, should be amended to include election “tickets.” The sooner party politics were eliminated from local body elections the better it will be for local body administration, declared Mr H. Firth, Mayor of Petone. Opposition to the remit came from representatives of Christchurch, Auckland and Wellington. Mr T. C. A. Hisiop, Mayor of Wellington, urged that in city elects s so many nominations were received that it was impossible for a voter to remember the names of all for whom he wished to vote. It was pointed out by the president, Mr T. Jordan, Mayor of Masterton, that the remit was brought forward by the Town Clerks’ Association, and that it could not, therefore, be regarded as puerile.
