MORRINSVILLE AFFAIRS
WATER SUPPLY QUESTION DAIRY COMPANY’S COMPLAINT (Special to Time?) MORRINSVILLE. Tuesday Correspondence received rrom the New Zealand Co-operative Dairy Company at the meeting of the Morrinsville Borough Council. at which the Mayor, Mr W. Hetherington presided, stated that difficulty was being experienced In obtaining sufficient water for its Morrinsville factory* The company asked the council to attend to the matter. The town clerk reported that Mr W. A. Gray, the engineer In charge or the waterworks programme, stated that for the size of the pipe the output of water from the pipe linking the main with the factory was not sufficient. The 3in pipe ! was only delivering the amount of water j that could be expected from a new 2sln I pipe although at the time the test was i made the pressure was good. The Mayor l moved that the matter be referred to the j works committee, with a suggestion that j everything should be done to assist the j dairy company. Mr Chapman did not agree with the l motion. He considered a special commit- ! tee of the council was required to go into the questlop oT water supply. The turncock had reported that the water was not ;n the reservoir and the council should ; see ir the water supply was any good. A special committee should go into Mr Gray's reports, and then bring down a re- I port. Mr Morrlre said that the reservoir I was not a mistake and that the council | would he In a very much worse position * without it. In the event or lire there was j a plentiful supply or water In the reservoir. Suppliers Outside Borough Tb° Mayor agreed with Mr MorN.ce that the council did not make a mistake with the reservoir. Morrinsville was not alone with water supply difficulties. The matter of supply was left to tin* works committee t-> bring down a report within two months. Application was received from the chairman or the kiw’itahi School Committee for a supply or water. The Mayor moved that the request be granted with a charge of 1/- per inoo gallons and a £5 minimum. Mr Chapman asked who out-ide the borough was getting water for less than £lO a year and live Mayor replied “no one.” Mr Chapman said that the borough hud a water liability or ffin.ooo or £70.000 and outside consumers should pay their fair share. Some ratepayers, who were using little water, were paying heavy rates and he failed to see why water should bo supplied for £5 a year. It was wrong to supply outside consumers ir they were unable to nil the ratepayers’ wants. An amendment by Mr Morrice that water be supplied lo the Kiwitahi School on a £lO minimum and 1/- per 1000 gallons was carried. The New Zealand Co-operative Dairy Company was granted permission to extend its railway siding from the railway yards to the factory over Moo chouse Street.
