SOLDIER HONOURED i * j The many friends of Sergeantj Pilot Gordon Woodroofe met in his ' honour at the home of Mr and Mrs ■ Gordon Sutherland recently. The 1 social, which was arranged by the St. > Andrew’s Presbyterian Bible Classes, j was attended by the Mayor and Mayi oress, Mr and Mrs W. A. Gordon, and j Miss V. Jamieson, representing the Matamata Patriotic Society. Com--1 petitions and singing occupied most : of the evening. I Messrs E. Huston, S. Huston and C. | McKenzie spoke on behalf of the J Bible Class, making reference to the : keen interest the guest-of-honour had shown, and particularly his enthusiasm in commencing the Matamata branch of the Scripture Union, which is still steadily growing. Mr E. Huston, on behalf of the Bible Class, asked Mr Woodroofe to accept a leather hold-all. In making presentation on behalf of the Matamata Patriotic Society, the Mayor said that the district was proud of Mr Woodroofe, and would follow his future career with interest. Mr Woodroofe suitably replied. A vote of thanks was accorded Mr and Mrs Sutherland for the use of their home. Those present included:—Mesdames G. Sutherland, R. Woodroofe, Sutherland, Senr.. Stower, H. Inglis, A. Potts, R. Rollett, B. Harrison. Misses Mortimer, M. Griffiths, R. Scott, D. Bolt, B. Cullen. D. Barugh, M. Barugh, E. Campbell, B. Cameron, N. Rowe, M. Hawes, T. Hawes, S. Fawcett, J. Fawcett, A. Huston, V. Jamison and Johnston. PLUNKET MEETING At the usual bi-monthly meeting of the Matamata sub-branch of the Plunket Society, held this month, the following members were present:— Mesdames G. G. Bell (president), Fawcett (treasurer), G Johnston, W. Gundy, Stewart, Findlater and Wade (secretary). Nurse Longdeu’s report showed 447 visits to the rooms for December and Nurse Smith, who relieved for January, reported 390 visits for that month. As the treasurer, Mrs Fawcett, would be away on holiday it was decided to advertise later the date of the forthcoming annual meeting. Accounts amounting to £4B were I passed for payment and it was decided to carry out necessary repairs and improvements in the Plunket rooms. GIFT AFTERNOON An enjoyable gift afternoon was held at the residence of Mrs A. P. Young, Harris Road, recently, in honours of Miss Jessie Reid, whose marriage is to take place shortly. During the afternoon competitions were held, the winners being Mrs Rowe and Mrs Irving, New Plymouth, j After a delicious afternoon tea had ’ been served, the hostess wished the j guest-of-honour every happiness and I called upon her to open her presents. I Miss Reid suitably replied. Among those present were:—Mesdames R. Wyatt, R. de Manser, Bartlett, Rowe, H. Berg, D. Roebuck, L. ’ Carlisle, Reid, Irving, Witshire, L. Zanders, Bishop, M. Addenbrooke. Misses Reid and Kemp.
