SHOPPING AN ADVENTURE (By E. Ruth Sibley.) According to Germany, “ we should all be dead, or at least standing on a heap of rubble.” The destruction of homes and hospitals, etc., is a tragedy which saddens those who escape the bombs, but the enemy is indulging in “ wishful thinking •’ when he imagines he can put London down like that. With increasing governmental restrictions, shopping is daily becoming more of an a a venture. One sets out with one thing in mind, and usually returns with something very different. Everything in this war must be mobile, and that applies to minds as much as munitions, so we are learning to switch rapidly from what We would like to what we can get. Royal Example As usual the Queen is inspiring women this winter by choosing few new clothes, and “making over ’ many of her coats and furs, just as the average woman will have to do in the coming months. The oeret witn a few pleats on the left side is Her iYlajesty’s favourite style of hat. She lias it adapted to women of her type, giving length to a rounded face and height to a petite ngure. Aiso it seems right for so many occasions that call for either simple or elaborate dressing. Short Woollen Frock The thin woollen frock, with short sleeves and skirt which saves material, is another of her wartime economies, and in parma violet or china blue particularly becoming to her lovely colouring. This simple frock is a favourite m smartest circles; thp Duchess oi Kent has chosen one in brown and a similar one in black velvet for afternoon wear, while her newest hat is the “ postman ” shape, with peaked brim and tufted quiJl. Black is the perennial favourite of the London woman for informal occasions. and there is a constant demand for new ideas in black
