NURSES’ GARDEN FETE

BRILLIANT SUMMER WEATHER LARGE CROWD ATTENDS The precincts of the Waikato Hospital were transformed yesterday afternoon, when the nurses held a garden fete to raise funds in support of their queen, Miss Sophie Ryburn. Although the major portion of the activities were held in the grounds of Dr. Gould’s residence, many enterprising concerns such as “Cooks Tourist Department,” which arranged personally conducted tours over the hospital, did a brisk business on every busy corner. On the heavily ladfcn stalls was ample evidence of the industry and ingenuity of the nurses and their friends, and it was not very long before the eager purchasers relieved the stallholders of their duties by all their goods. The excellent tennis courts proved very popular, and the trv.sure hunt and monkey house waS patronised by all with a taste for adventure. In the nurses’ dining room a delicious afternoon tea was served, the many willing helpers finding it hard work to cope with the large influx of patrons seeking refreshment.

The Nurses’ Queen, Miss Sophie Ryburn, was present, and was wearing a charming frock of periwinkle olue embroidered marquisette, and a large black hat. The winners of the baby show were as follows:—One to three months, Pamela Hayward; three to six months, Eric Mathers; six to nine months, Janette Holloway; six to 12 months, Jennifer McFarland; 12 to 18 months, lan Arthur. The stallholders were as follows: — Fancy work, Sister D. Walker and Sister V. Herdman, assisted by maternity nurses; sweets, Sisters G. Moody, U. Magill, I. Bridson and G. Gardner; produce and cakes (Sunshine League), Mrs I. Owsley, Mrs C. J. Pierce, Mrs F. Herbert and Mrs F. O. Knight; novelty stall, Miss D. Gould and Miss G. Broad; flowers, and darts board, Diocesan old girls; meat, Miss D. Menzies and Sister C. Henderson; monkey house, Lewis and Co.; afternoon tea, Sister Greenwood. Mrs H. H. Toombs, Mrs E. Wallace and Miss I. Vercoe; Cook’s Tours, Sister I. Martin. Treasure hunts, a copper trail, competitions, etc., were all conducted very efficiently by numerous nurses.
