CANADIAN REINDEER
INCREASE IN HERDS Canada’s main reindeer herd now comprises more than 5000 animals, with a fawn increase of 1486 head, the largest yet recorded. The annual roundup in which the animals are examined, counted and classified and the animals in excess of the requirements of the herd selected for slaughter later when the meat is prime, is staged each year on the summer range on Richard’s island, 60 miles north of Aklavik at the mouth of the Mackenzie River.
This year's roundup was completed in four days.
