FIRST CHURCH FUNCTION A large gathering of First Church ' followers met in the Scout Hall, King Street, on Thursday evening, j to honour Miss Amy Dempster, who ; is shortly to be married and will be severing her connection with , First Church. i Mr W. Truman, who was master j of ceremonies, eulogised Miss Demp- ( ster’s willing services as a choir , member over a number of years, and i referred to her ready assistance at j all times. In wishing her every j happiness in her new sphere Mr Truman, on behalf of the congrega- , ! tion, presented the guest-of-honour \ I with a silver tea-service as a token l of esteem and in remembrance of | happy associations with First Church. : Messrs W. Choat and L. Wells en- : dorsed Mr Truman’s remarks. | Miss Dempster suitably replied, ; and Mr W. Dempster also spoke on ( j behalf of his daughter. Opportunity was taken to bid God- , I speed to another valued choir memI ber, Private James Choat, prior to J his departure for overseas service. ! Mr Truman, in presenting a shaving j companion, referred to the assistance so willingly given by Private Choat, I and congratulated him on answering j the call of his King and country. ; Members of the Young People’s Club i had previously presented a morocco- | bound Testament to Private Choat at their social. ! Musical honours were accorded ' Miss Dempster and Private Choat. ! The following items were thoroughly enjoyed:—’Cello solos, Miss Yvonne McLachlin; songs, Mrs T. A. Edwards; vocal duets, Miss Lil Mcj Lean and Mr Ron Fowler; Irish jig, Betty Choat; songs, Mr Eric Truman. Accompanists were Mesdames W. McLachlin, T. A. Edwards and Miss . I. Choat.
