WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

RECEIPT OF PARCELS LETTER FROM EGYPT The following is an extract from a letter received by Mrs R. D. Banks, Tamahere, from her son in Egypt, expressing appreciation of parcels sent by the Women’s Institutes:— Egypt, 22nd Sept. “We all received a parcel each from the Women’s Institutes all over New Zealand. Mine came from the Ormondville Institute in Hawke’s Bay and had a great assortment of useful articles, a pad and envelopes, barley sugar, 25 Capstan, pineapple, handkerchief, cake of soap and holder, coffee and milk and razor blades, so altogether I did quite well and we all had great fun opening the parcels. I am going to write a short letter to the Institute telling them how much we appreciate the things. These are the first patriotic parcels we have had.” MELVILLE The Melville Women’s Institute recently celebrated its sixth birthday with a party in the hall, the guests being received by the hostesses, Mrs Priest and Miss Goucher. The presi- : dent, Mrs Prisk, in her opening speech, extended a hearty welcome to all visitors. The following enjoyable pro- j gramme was presented: Recitations, Mrs Zelda Fahey: songs, Mrs Jury, Mrs Wood and Patty Bramley. The accompaniments were played by Mesdames King, Grant and Bramley. The artists were presented with ; shoulder sprays by the president. Greetings and good wishes were received from the following insti- : tutes:—Jubilee, Whitiora, Norton - Rotokauri, Hillcrest and Fairfield, and also from the Waikato Federation Executive, and Mrs Prisk was the recipient of many beautiful bouquets from the visiting institutes. Competitions were won by Miss Roach and Mesdames Sco'bie, Bramley and Brown. A dainty afternoon tea was served by the members. WAITOA The October meeting of the Waitoa Women’s Institute was held in the local hall recently, when the president, Mrs H. Kerr, presided over a large attendance of members. A new member. Mrs A. Fairweather, was welcomed and enrolled. A vote of thanks was passed to Mrs J. B. Wathen for her services in connection with.the soldiers’ parcels. Members handed in a number cf gifts, which will be forwarded to the leper colony. It was decided ,; o send gifts of native crafts to the English institutes. An invitation to be present at the field day, which is to be held at Nga- 1 rua, was received. It was also decided that members would assist at the Te Aroha Agricultural and Pastoral Show. The competitions for next month are for soldiers’ mittens and decorative flowers (variety of 6 blooms). The roll call was 1 inch of interesting printed matter. Mrs Watkin gave a demonstration of loop work. Results of the competitions were as follows:—Best flower, Miss O. Luxton 1, Mrs S. Hyde 2, Mrs*R. Malcolm 3. Mrs R. Colson 4; puff pastry tarts, Mrs A. Souter 1. Mrs Watkin 2. Mrs Colson 3: embroidered d’oyley, Mrs I. Doughty 1, Mrs A. J. Graham 2. Mrs I. Jensen 3. An enjoyable meeting was brought to a close with afternoon tea served by the hostesses, Mesdames C. Graham, E. Hayes and A. Cunliffe. TAI’WHARE The Tauwhare Women’s Institute held its sixth birthday in the hall on October 10, when Mrs Goodare presided. There was a large attendance of members and many visitors. Mrs J. W. Chapman, president of the Waikato Federation of Women’s In- i stitutes, wished the institute much i success and many happy returns. Mrs Chapman gave a most enjoy- i able address, which was greatly j appreciated. Two new members, Mesdames O. Scott and Spence, were given a hearty welcome. The presidents of the Eureka, ; Motumaho and Kaipiro Institutes , presented Mrs Goodare with dainty ; bouquets. Apologies for absence i were received from Morrinsville and j Matangi Institutes. Pride of place was taken by the j cake, made and iced by Mrs Eva. j Mrs Ferries, eldest member, lit and ! blew out the candles, and presented j Mrs Chapman and Mrs Goodare with j posies. An amusing game was won by Mrs Worm. Musical items were con- I tributed by Mesdames Woods, C-athro j and Miss E. Scott, Valerie Scott and j Beryl Cathro. Miss Joan Chapman j was pianist. Mrs Chapman pre- j sented bouquets to the assisting » artists. I Competitions were won by the I following:—Best flower, Mesdames Ferris 1, Andrews 2, Fleming 3. Jar of antirrhiniums: Mesdames N. Pope U Fleming 2, Andrews 3. Best hand or machine-worked cushion: Mesdames Neil 1, Woods 2, Andrews 3. j Mrs Eva won the silk tea cosy. j

Afternoon tea was served by the Dstesses, Mesdames Coles, Griffin id Robinson.

TAPAPA Mrs Pevreal presided over a good attendance at the monthly meeting of the Tapapa Institute held on October 12. The flower show was also held and the room was filled with flowers and flowering shrubs. After the usual business matters had been dealt with a novel competition of knitting with two pointed wooden matches and a piece of wool was won by Mrs R. Cochrane. The cup for The best bloom was won by Mrs McHardv and the garden circle raffle donated by Mrs R. Cochrane, was won by Mrs Fuller. Afternoon tea was served by Mrs Harwood. Reid, presided over an excellent attendance of members at the monthlv meeting of the Kereone Women’s Institute. held in the local hall recently. Mrs M. White was welcomed as a new member. A general discussion took place in regard to the Federation of Women’s Institute’s biennial meeting which is to be held at Matamata. and Mrs Hamoshire was annointed delegate to the meeting. The president reported that Christmas gifts had been sent by the institute to local men serving with the forces overseas. Mrs M. J. Davies gave an instructive talk and demonstration on first aid. During the tea interval opportunity was taken to honour the oldest member. Mrs Mclntyre, sen., on the occasion of her birthday. A beautifullv decorated cake was presented by the president. On behalf of members Mrs Davies expressed esteem and good wishes to the guest of honour. Mrs Reid proposed the toast, and Mrs Mclntyre suitably replied. It was decided that the annual flower and cookery display be he'd at the next meeting on the same lines as before. A competition for the best flower in the garden was won by Mrs Dennis. Mesdames Crow and Days and Miss Days were the hostesses for the day. NGARUAWAIIIA The monthly meeting of the Ngaruawahia Women’s Institute was held in the Returned Soldiers’ Hall, Mrs M. Loughran presiding over a good attendance cf members. During the afternoon Mrs Dagg gave a talk on flower decorations, and awarded first and second points to Mrs Johnstone.

Mrs McGaughran was nominated for the Dominion Council. Members present gave donations for war purpose funds, and soldiers’ parcels were forwarded to headquarters at Huntly. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mesdames Johnstone and Carr.
