WAIKATO ACTIVITIES RETURNED SOLDIERS’ NOTES (By “Dink”) There are a number of returned soldiers with the 16th Waikato Regiment in camp at Cambridge. Lt.Col. E. M. Mackersey was formerly in the Wellington Company of the Machine Gun Battalion, Major S. E. Senior, M.C., in the N.Z.R.D., Capt. F. Kingsford in the 76th Waikato Company; Lieut. R. Challoner in the Ist Battalion N.Z.R.8., and Lieut. W. Dick in the Lothian and Border Horse and the Rifle Brigade of the B.E.F. Capt. F. B. McWhannell. M.C., the Adjutant, Capt. C. A. Voss, the Transport Officer, and Lieut. W. Dingle, Quartermaster of the Temporary Staff, also all saw service in the last war. The officers are all very pleased with the type of N.C.O and men who are now under them and with the progress which they are making in their training. J. M. Haggo, a member of the local R.S.A., is now a Sergeant in the 17th Railway Operators Company in the 3rd echelon. Capt. F. B. McWhannell. attached to the Area Office at Hamilton, served with the Australian Infantry in the last war and his ribbons, besides showing the Military Cross, indicate that he was mentioned threj times in despatches. Attention is drawn to the fact that once again a great day is about to come around. The Returned Soldiers’ annual golf tournament is to be staged at St. Andrews on November 3. The zero hour is at 8 a.m. and the plan of attack contains many attractive items.

The Diggers who participated in last year’s tournament will not require any persuasion to join the ranks again this year. A close watch will be kept on the form of the players and will be the subject of a paragraph in this column at a later late. Any further particulars may be obtained from Mr Horace Toombs. Ample provision is made lor awkward squads so that any tyro at the game will have just as good a time as the more efficient players.
