MUSHROOM SUPPLY

BRITISH FOOD NEED Housewives in Britain are raising more mushrooms in response to the Minister of Agriculture’s “grow more food” campaign. Home-grown mushrooms used to be relegated chiefly to the cellar—that cavern-like place which used to be built below the parlour in oldfashioned houses. But in houses where there is no raid shelter the family might have to descend hastily to the cellar any dark night at the sound of the air raid alarm. Mother pould not risk the extra excitement of Junior sitting in the mushroom bed, so she has had to move the mushrooms. In deciding where to put them her thought turned to her newly-cleaned-out loft. Waste paper has been collected, old scrap metal sent away for war material, and trunks moved to reduce risk of fire. So this is not only the best place to keep the mushrooms, but as the bed is always kept moist, it provides a dampening influence to any incendiary bomb.
