EUREKA FUNCTIONS

TENNIS OPENING There was a large attendance at the Eureka Tennis courts on Saturday afternoon, when play for the new season began with a Yankee tournament. Visitors from surrounding districts were present and some excellent games were played. Mr A. Nixon, president of the club, declared the courts open and asked Mrs Saward to play the first ball. The winners of the tournament were Mrs S. Schernack and Mr A. Hinton. The ladies of the committee served afternoon tea. Those present were:—Mesdames C. Saward, T. Dalziel, A. Hinton, A. Johns, R. Hinton, I. Begbie (Morrinsville), G. Copestake, L. Masters, S. Schernack, A. Powdrill, S. Nixon. Misses E. Saward, N. Johns, D. Dalziel, M. Jones, V. Muir, Alva Hinton, J. Ranstead, S. Lovelock (Tauwhare;), N. Ranstead (Matangi).

CARD EVENING The last of a series of card evenings organised by the Ladies’ Social Club, Eureka, was held on Monday evening. These evenings have proved most successful financially, and the funds have mostly been used for soldiers’ comforts, the balance going to the hall fund. Flag five hundred was played, Mesdames W. Edwards and E. M. Masters and Miss I. Saward being the successful trio. Mrs Harris was the winner of a guessing competition. Mesdames C. Masters and R. Townsend, and Miss N. Harris were hostesses for the evening. Those present were:—Mesdames C. Masters, A. Johns, E. M. Masters, R. Townsend, B. Larsen, R. Townsend, A. Powdrill, L. Harris, W. Edwards, J. Young, C. Cresswell, K. Inglis. Misses H. Saleman, N. Johns, E. Saward. D. Leet, N. Harris.

JOLLY DANCE A jolly dance, organised by the patriotic committee, was held in the Eureka Hall on Saturday night. Critchley’s Orchestra supplied excellent music, Mrs C. Masters playing the extras. Cards were provdied for non-dancers, Mesdames J. Young and Ross Hinton and Mr Ashman (Hamilton) being the successful players. Miss D. Griffiths and Mr T. Horn were the winners of a novelty dance. Mesdames W. G. Jones, C. Masters, S. Nixon and J. Young attended to the supper. Those present were:—Mesdames R. Townsend, L. Harris, C. Masters, A. Johns, S. Schernack. A. Hinton,- K. Inglis, J.
