HIGH SCHOOL AMENITIES MOVE FOR NEW GYMNASIUM (Special to Times.) TE AWAMUTU, Wednesday. The Te Awarnutu District High School Committee met on Monday, when Mr G. R. Melrose presided. Adams and A. A. Hughes, representing ilio Te Awamiiiu Mnatenr Athletic and Cycling Club, waited on tne committee in support of an application for Hie use of part of tlie school recreation ‘ area. Mr Adams said that the club wished to cater for the juveniles but could not got a satisfactory permanent track at Albert Park. It was resolved that permission be granted to the club to form and use a cycling and running track for use or club members and the school for training purposes and for matinee and evening meetings. The offer of the Young Men’s Institute to make the institute’s recreational apparatus available for the use of the school ir a gymnasium were provided was accepted, the chairman remarking that the offer was a generous one and that possibly the Department would grant a £2 to £1 subsidy for the provision of a building. It was decided to make repre--1 sentations to the Department, and a subcommittee was set up to carry on with the project. The possibility of having a swimming pool Incorporated was mentioned. Mr L. S. Armstrong, chairman of the Primary School Committee, waited on the eommittee and suggested that tlie two schools approach the Borough Council about the use of the municipal baths during school hours. The chairman and the headmaster were appointed to interview the borough finance, commit lee. An offer of £5 was made for an essay competition on “ Intolerance " or some kindred subject. It was stated that the donor was offering a similar sum to tlie Primary School for tlie encouragement of swimming, and had notified that, he was providing for a legacy to the school. Tinchairman said that during his association with school affairs in Te Awarnutu only one other donation had come to his knowledge. that of Mr G. s. Clarke for encouragement of swimming. The offer was gratefully accepted and the chairman and headmaster were asked to arrange the
competition. The headmaster reported that, the free milk scheme was proving satisfactory. YOUNG FARMERS’ CLUB INTERESTING DEBATES There was an attendance of about 30 members at the Young Farmers’ Club monthly meeting at the Parish Hall last night, Mr Mawson Lorrimer presiding. New members elected were Messrs. G. 11. Terry, R. Whyte and N. Donald. Arrangements were made fur a stock demmistration at Mr J. S. Paulson's farm next Tuesday. For the November meeting. an eirort is being made to have a lecture by Mr A. 11. Ward, of Wellington. It was decided not to take any official part in the queen carnival but members will be free to assist individually. The nortli queen has not been selected, and in the south-western area no candidate has been chosen. It Is reeogni.-ed that the £4500 to be found in the Te Awarnutu district is a big objective, but nothing is being left undone tij gain It.
