SERIOUS CHARGE

UNLICENSED TRANSMITTER OFFENCE AT HUNTLY Charged with sustaining and using an unlicensed wireless transmitting plant, Henry F. Vennall (Mr K. S. Caldwell), railway porter, of Te Kauwhata, appeared before Mr W. H. Freeman, S.M., in the Huntly Magistrate's Court today. Mr H. T. Gillies, Crown Prosecutor, pointed out that though there was no evidence that wireless messages had been transmitted the apparatus in the possession of Vennall was capable of sending out messages over a wide area and could be used for establishing contact with the enemy.

The magistrate emphasised the serious nature of the offence and a fine of £SO was imposed.
